Can I drive golf carts in Town

Golf carts and utility vehicles may be used by licensed drivers on streets within the Town that have a posted speed limit of 25mph or less.  There is no longer a Town registration required.  The Police enforce street legal requirements and travel on permitted streets.

Can I rent a boat slip on a month to month basis at the town marina?

All slips and bulkheads are available for rent by transient boaters only.  Onancock does not rent seasonal slips (monthly) during the following months March – October.  If you are interested in renting a slip during our off-season time please contact the Harbormaster, 757-787-7911, for availability and rates.

Do I need a vehicle decal if I live in town?
  • No.  As of February 2021, Onancock Town Residents are no longer required to purchase a vehicle decal.  
  • In lieu of the decal, a vehicle license fee will be added to your personal property tax bill at the end of the year.

  • There is no fee to reserve the spot.  This is a public space and will not be closed to any person.

How do I make a reservation at the town marina for a weekend stay?

To reserve a slip for a short-term stay at the Onancock Wharf you can contact the Harbormaster at 757-787-7911 or visit  our website here and select the Reserve Now button.

How do I obtain a seasonal ramp decal for my boat?

-  As of the 2021 Boating Season, ramp usage for all will be free.  There will be a charge for parking unless the boater has a current Accomack County decal affixed to their vehicle.  All Accomack County residents with a boat will receive their free decal in the mail along with their first six-month personal property tax bill from the County.

How to obtain a Business License

To obtain a business license, please come to Town Hall located at 15 North Street, Onancock, VA 23417.

The annual fee is determined by the Town Council. The current fee is $30.00.

Every business must be current with all fees, invoices, and taxes in order to receive a business license.

New businesses must comply with all zoning and ordinance requirements for the district in which the business intends to operate.

Meals Tax: 5%

Personal Property Tax: $2 per $100 of value.  Personal Vehicles $1.70 per $100 of value

Business Personal Property Taxes: Effective 2022 the tax of business tools and equipment is $0

Town Real Estate Taxes: The Town Tax Rate is $0.28/$100 of Assessed Valuation

Transient Occupancy: All hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, or any short-term rental (Homestay like VRBO and AirBnB) must collect and remit to Onancock a Transient Occupancy Tax of 5%.

What is schedule for brush and limb pick-up? What are the requirements for removal of yard debris?

-  Yard debris is collected during the first full week of the new month. 
-  Guidelines:

  • No more than ten (10) bags and no more than a pick-up load of brush bags combined will be removed.
  • No limbs larger than six (6) inches in diameter.
  • All limbs must have their ends facing the street side & no more than six (6) feet from the curb.
  • Secure all bags properly so that no water can get into them.  If any single bag weighs more than 40 pounds it will not be taken.
  • Please keep brush & bags separate from the brush pile.
  • Do not cover the water meter cover with any brush and bags.
  • ​Do not combine brush piles with neighbors.

What is the Leash Law for Dogs

Dogs must be on a leash when off your property. And, please pick up after your dog when walking them. The town has baggie stations set up throughout town for convenience in picking up and disposing of the pet mess.

What is the phone number for the DMV located across the street from Town Hall?

There is no local number to the DMV in Onancock, VA.  You must call Richmond, VA number at 804-487-7100 to be transferred to the local DMV.

When is garbage pick-up

Picked up weekly (Wednesday) by Davis Disposal.  You are provided one tote by Davis.  If you want or need additional totes, you must arrange that with Davis.  There is an annual fee of approximately $140 paid directly to Davis.

You are allowed one tote and one small bag of garbage each week.  Any more than that you must take to the County dump or convenience center.

The fee for trash pick-up is billed on your bi-monthly Water bill.

Where to Obtain Building Permits and Codes

Building permits and inspections are done by Accomack County.  Their website is here.

The Town MUST have a completed and approved Zoning Permit Application (available here) in order for Accomack County to consider your building permit application.
