Visit Onancock

Onancock Town Square

Nestled between bay and sea, Onancock weaves together a tapestry of stories from past and present through its people, places, cuisine, and art. Discover this gem of Virginia’s Eastern Shore that dazzled Captain John Smith over four centuries ago.

Onancock is home to nearly 1,200 people and preserves its residential character all the while boasting a Downtown district with varied dining options from pubs to five-star.  The town also offers different accommodations from premium bed and breakfast to boutique hotels.

The art and artisan community in Onancock is like none other on the Shore.  Galleries pepper the Downtown district and even the historic high school has been converted to individual artisan studios.

There are two museums in Town; the Maritime Museum (a small volunteer-run museum) and the Eastern Shore Historical Society.

Onancock has had a live theater running for over 35 years.  Main Stage productions often bring in professional actors from major markets who work with local actors and even actors from our local high school when appropriate.

Our local 1950's 1950s-era movie theater still has the old-time charm while running new-release films.  Roseland Theater also hosts the International Film Festival where once each month a renowned international film is made available to the public at a deeply discounted price to allow everyone to experience this type of culture.

The ferry to Tangier Island leaves every day from May to October, giving easy access to one of the Bay's most treasured assets and experiences.

The Onancock Creek is one of the most special places to watch the sunset, or to paddle independently or with a guide.  Cruising or paddling up and down the Creek gives you a chance to see a part of Onancock that few experience.

Our local Farmer's Market also runs from May to October outdoors with local farmers and artisans with live music playing in the background.  During winter months, the Market continues to operate with seasonal produce, baked goods, and other treats.

In addition to galleries and Markets, Onancock boasts some of the finest women's clothing options on The Shore.

Are you traveling with your dog?  We have a new dog park with a full acre play space for bigger dogs, and half acre for our smaller friends.  There is fresh water and even a paw-washing station!  The are local accommodations that are dog-friendly.

Onancock is the heart of the Shore.  We are a perfect base camp to experience all the attractions north and south.  Come Stay, Play, Shop, Dine, and Experience Onancock.
