Little
League for the younger players
2008 Central Accomack Little League
Central
Accomack Little League, known as C.A.L.L., was started in 1958.
We
are celebrating our 50th
Anniversary this year. When the League
was started 50 years ago, they had about 60 players and four teams —
the
Fireman, Lions, Rotary, and VFW.
Chalmers Horsley, of Onancock, was one of the original coaches
of the
VFW. Many other locals helped get the
league going and carried the tradition on for many years.
Now
Central Accomack Little League has started it’s 2008 season. The
League now consists of 30 teams and about
350 players. We have seven tee ball
teams, nine minor, four 9-10 boys, three 11-12 boys, one junior boys,
then two
9-10 girls, two 11-12 girls and two
junior softball teams. They ages
range from
5 years old to 16 years old. Each team
has a manager and a coach, who are all volunteers. If
it wasn’t for the parents that volunteer,
it would be very difficult to keep the league operating.
With
the amount of children we have in the League, we are trying hard to
keep the
facilities up to date and capable of accommodating the children of
today. As most Town residents know, this
is the last
year C.A.L.L. will be playing at Fireman’s Field. Because
of this, the League is in the process
of building new fields, or we should say, a whole new complex. The new
complex
will be very modern and up to date. Not
only will we have four ball fields,
but also a playground and
a walking
trail
that will be open to the public. Three
of the four ball fields will be lit and accommodate night games. The playgrounds can be used by siblings during
games or by anyone out for an afternoon of fun in the sun. The walking trail will be accessible to
everyone and be
a good exercise
routine for all ages.
C.A.L.L.
has many volunteers, but with this project that we are now undertaking,
we
always need more help. We not only need
financial assistance but physical help too. Many
people do not understand the work that is
involved in building a single ball field let alone four of them.
Each
field costs approximately $20,000 and
involves a lot of labor. Anyone that
would like to help either physically or financially, please contact the
League
President, Joe Colona at 787-4550.
